Early Childhood Education System. The Stakeholders and Key Organisations Peak
Home » Public Area » The Big Issues - Our Positions » Group sizes and Ratios
Our position is that regulation for small group size in all early childhood centres is urgently needed and ratios need to be set by group instead of the current ‘under the roof’ approach. We advocate for ratios for under-2s to be reduced from 1:5 to 1:3 or at least 1:4, and for young children from 1:10 to 1:8. A small group size with sufficient adults for the needs and number of children are key elements in ensuring children’s safety, good learning outcomes, and supporting positive and nurturing relationships.
Did you know that under Alert Level 3 for Covid-19 in NZ, bubble sizes of no more than 20 children were achieved? It led to real benefits for children – for both their health and learning. It also meant that teachers were not spread out across many children and were able to spend more time on teaching instead of just supervision.
