Our position is that an emphasis on food safety and safe eating is critical in early childhood services and the Ministry of Education must accept responsibility to ensure that best practices are followed in services. For example, food that an older child may safely chew and swallow is not always safe for a younger child to be given. Also, children may have allergies or other special health needs. Teaching staff need a good knowledge of food safety practices. They should be able to identify signs of anaphylaxis and choking (choking is different from gagging). Knowing the correct first aid to give is essential for any teacher or carer of young children.
