Mahuru Māori: Challenge to use as much te reo as you can has begun
The 2025 Mahuru Māori challenge is underway.
The premise of the initiative, which began on August 23 and runs until September 22 this year, is to speak as much te reo as possible.
Depending on your level of fluency this could mean greeting everyone you come into contact with in te reo Māori only, speaking te reo for 2 hours every day or speaking only te reo for the entire month.
Or you could try to extend your knowledge and skills by following a calendar of daily challenges (tailored to beginner, intermediate or advanced fluency) that the organisers have put together.
The aim of the initiative, which launched in 2014, is to help revitalise the Māori language.
For early childhood educators, doing the challenge can support tamariki to learn the language alongside you.
You can track your progress towards your challenge goals by registering on the Mahuru Māori website.
